TOP TREND "THE LUXE TOUCH"

It’s been an exciting season with new trends galore including equestrian, gothic and embellishment, and indulgent investment pieces (that Jil Sander coat, those Sophie Hulme bags). So, it may be a surprise to find that the humble shirt and classic polo neck are everywhere this season but it’s for good reason: versatile and easy to layer, these garments will be the cornerstone of every wardrobe in 2013.

Fashion follows the mantra ‘too much is never enough’ right now, and therefore the loud and proud shirts seen at Erdem and Kenzo in vibrant, geometric prints are just the thing. Buttoned up and teamed with an understated jacket – or, if you’re feeling brave, a clashing patterned jacket – is currently the epitome of chic. With this carefree attitude, it is perfectly acceptable to pair a striped shirt and tie (you can’t go wrong with masculine flourishes this season) under a Fair Isle jumper and Ralph Lauren tweed jacket, or layer a delicate metallic shirt under a chunky denim one in homage to the always-cool label Acne.
The roll neck is now a key piece: think big and bold. Christopher Kane’s chunky knits were oversized in the extreme and pulled up almost to models’ ears, whilst Pringle of Scotland were clearly a little in love with the staple. Thick and ribbed, in a classic palette of rust, grey and navy, they were teamed with a matching cardigan or bomber jacket for maximum impact. Key rules when wearing a polo neck: keep the neck high, and the fit neat and tight, so when slipped under coats and jackets they keep the silhouette simple and smooth.

If these failsafe options are just a little too much, fear not – fashion has another answer up its sleeve: the Peter Pan collar. Embellished, contrast, bejewelled and patent – these magpie-worthy accessories can lift any top in an instant with minimal effort. Think of them as your new season jewellery to wear alone, or in the spirit of the ‘anything goes’ season, layer over a plain shirt or roll neck. For inspiration, browse and buy ladies’ tops for your own take on this season’s classic separates.
